To help those who might have had a difficult time purchasing basic supplies they need to start school including pens, pencils, highlighters, erasers, binders and paper Kiwanis Club of Fremont paired up with the district to accept donations that will be divided and distributed to local students across Fremont Unified.
The district parks a yellow school bus in front of the Walmart store, located at 40580 Albrae Boxes of donations are presorted and placed on the bus.
At the end of the day the driver picks up the bus filled with school supplies and takes it back to the district office for distribution.
We have our high school Kiwanis club members, key clubbers, hand out flyers to customers about donating supplies. We also had a large list in the front of the store and another one near the school supplies section.
The club has a table set up in front of the store where customers can drop of donations manned by 10 key club members from high schools across the district and six Kiwanis members that were sorted and loaded onto the bus. This is the club's fourth year holding the "Stuff the Bus" event, and Fremont Kiwanis hopes to see the event continue and grow.
This year, 97 boxes of supplies were collected in one day, compared to the 57 boxes over the course of two days last year.
Hosting this event is important to the Kiwanis Club, whose purpose is to help children, adults and families in the community.
Children are definitely our priority.
Heminez hopes to have enough resources each year to make the event two-days, and would love to work with other organizations to do the event.
The bigger the event, the more it does for the kids.
